An appreciation for Mexican food and culture, including art, are on display in this year’s 15th annual children’s drawing contest , sponsored by the Mexican Ministry of Foreign Affairs. In Laredo, the contest is being locally administered by the Consulate General and the Mexican Cultural Institute of Laredo.
The theme of this year’s children’s drawing contest is “Mexican cuisine: Intangible Cultural Heritage of Mankind .” Focused on Mexican food and culture, this theme builds on last year’s recognition by UNESCO of Mexican food as part of our Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity. UNESCO praised Mexican food as “a comprehensive cultural model comprising farming, ritual practices, age-old skills, culinary techniques and ancestral community customs and manners.”
The Laredo area can take pride in the success of local children in this contest over the years. In 2009 and 2010, Laredo children have placed among the top 15 drawings in the international competition. In addition, the drawings of several local children were selected in an exhibit of 80 outstanding works by the Institute of Mexicans Abroad for inclusion in a special edition calendar of artwork.
